Communications Coordinator
 

The Episcopal Diocese of Alabama seeks a Communications Coordinator to work full-time assisting the diocese in communicating with the 30,000 members of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Alabama, other Alabama residents, and the wider Church through print and electronic media.  This person will assist the Diocese in developing and implementing a coherent and effective communications plan and will be responsible for production of a wide variety of communication elements including online and print content, brochures, flyers, newsletters, and email notices.

This person will report to the Deputy for Finance and Administration with accountability to the Bishops of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama.   This person should also enjoy working on a team with responsibility for the mission of the Diocese in a collaborative atmosphere.
 

Major Areas of Responsibility:

This person will direct the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy for the diocese working with lay and ordained leaders to design, implement, and guide the communications strategy.  The person will also have primary responsibility for cooperating with an outside vendor in conducting a branding process for the diocese. 

The Communications Coordinator will produce and post content to the web site of the diocese ensuring that the site remains current and effective in providing information and opportunities.  The person will assist volunteers and other staff in maintaining their respective sections of the site and will provide training as necessary.  This person will monitor content on the web site and coordinate resolution of technical issues.

The Communications Coordinator will supervise the editor of the diocesan newspaper, The Apostle, and coordinate the content and layout of the publication with other diocesan publications.

The Communications Coordinator will design and produce print media such as brochures, flyers, and church bulletin inserts that will convey a "diocesan look" while presenting specific information and opportunities involving diocesan ministries, programs, and activities. 

The Communications Coordinator will cultivate and maintain connections with public media, e.g. newspapers, television stations, throughout the area of the diocese and coordinate the distribution of information from the diocese to these media.  The Communications Coordinator will support and guide the bishops in their interaction with local media and in their role as  spokespersons for the diocese. 

The Communications Coordinator will develop and maintain connections with national Episcopal media including Episcopal Life, and The Living Church. The Coordinator will distribute information on diocesan ministries and programs to these publications and their online components and access information for use in diocesan publications. 

The Communications Coordinator will edit a monthly print newsletter for distribution to lay and ordained leaders throughout the diocese.  The Coordinator will be responsible for developing online accessibility and distribution of the publication.  The Coordinator will be assisted by other staff in handling preparation of the newsletter for distribution through the mail. 

The Communications Coordinator will produce booklets for diocesan worship events and for the annual diocesan convention. 

The Communications Coordinator will provide overall coordination of all diocesan publications working to ensure that the best vehicle is chosen and that the overall "message" of the diocese is coordinated throughout all diocesan publications, both print and electronic.

Qualifications:

The Communications Coordinator will demonstrate superior knowledge of standard English usage and an ability to compose text in a succinct, attractive, and effective manner.  Knowledge of Spanish is not required but will be considered an advantage.   A person experienced in media relation or with the personal skills critical in nurturing and maintaining relationships with local media will be preferred.

The Communications Coordinator will document experience with the technical aspects of online communications including web sites, email publications, networking web sites, e.g. FaceBook.   The Communications Coordinator will be able to acquire a working understanding of new systems and opportunities with ease.

The Communications Coordinator will be familiar with issues related to he design and production of printed materials including brochures and booklets. 

The Communications Coordinator will be familiar with the Episcopal Church and comfortable within Church groups involved in worship, service, or fellowship.   Membership in the Episcopal Church is not required but is considered advantageous. 

The Communications Coordinator will be experienced in and comfortable with working with Microsoft Office software in a Windows environment but will not be limited to this platform.
 

Salary: 

The position is non-exempt under wage and hour laws and will be compensated within the range of $35,000 to $45,000 a year depending upon the experience level of the person.   Medical, pension and other benefits are available for this position at the employer's expense.

Work Environment: 

Equipment and space will be available in a shared office in the offices of the diocese.  However, the Communications Coordinator may work a limited schedule  from their home using equipment and internet connections provided by and belonging to the diocese.

Job Description

The Youth Director position will be a full-time, salaried staff position with benefits. This person is to be a member of, or have a working knowledge of, the Episcopal Church, serving as a Christian leader and minister to the youth of Trinity Church, through the following:

  • Oversee the development and implementation of programs for all youth in 6th - 12th grade
  • Regularly attend worship at Trinity, becoming a part of the life of the parish
  • Teach a Sunday morning class for the EYC
  • Plan and lead regular EYC gatherins on Sunday and Wednesday evenings
  • Coordinate participation in youth Sundays and annual Youth Day
  • Encourage parents and other parish members to volunteer as Youth Group Coordinators, assisting the Youth Director in the implementation of all programs, classes, mission trips, etc.
  • Help create and foster a sense of evangelism and outreach through mission projects on a local, national, and international level
  • Work as part of a team, functioning as a full member of the parish staff, reporting to the Rector
  • Plan and lead fund raising events for the EYC
  • Attend and facilitate the EYC at annual Parish Retreat
  • Be available and accessible to the youth through regular office hours as well as showing support in school and community activities
  • Attend training and comply with all diocesan regulations as required by the Diocese of Alabama

 Job Description

This position is responsible for facilitating and supervising all children's ministry programs and activities. This requires working closely with the Rector, as well as other ministry staff and volunteers. Currently, this is a 20-hour-per-week position. The requirements are:

  • Passion for children's ministry
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with children and parents
  • Ability to take initiative and follow up on projects
  • Ability to lead and facilitate meetings regarding the ministry and training
  • Knowledge of various Windows-based computer applications
  • Experience leading and working with various age groups of children and adults
  • A positive attitude and lots of energy
  • Comfortable sharing faith with others
  • Comfortabled with performance-related activities in front of a group (e.g. skits, songs with hand motions)
  • Must be willing to be trained in the "Catechesis of the Good Shepherd", a Montessori-based program, the Anglican liturgy, spiritual and intellectual tradition
  • Ability to help formulate and maintain a budget
  • Possess a four-year degree in a related field (e.g. Psychology, family studies, child development)
  • Must successfully complete a background check and undergo diocesan sexual conduct training ("Protecting God's Children")

Responsibilites:

This position includes but is not limited to the following responsibilities performed under the direction of the Rector:

  • Supervise, plan and direct weekly children and youth programs. Oversee the needs of the nursery, "Catechesis of the Good Shepherd" program, children's church, Journey to Adulthood, and the Sunday evening youth program (EYC)
  • Oversee the training for Sunday morning classes, children's church, and evenint youth programs, as well as any other volunteer training needed, including "Protecting God's Children" and Red Cross training for nursery workers
  • Coordinate and recruit volunteers for various annual events (Mardi Gras, Trunk-or-Treat, Christmas pageant, Vacation Bible School, Youth Sunday, and youth outreach projects) and as needed throughout the ministry year
  • Formulate and coordinate future children's events and activities
  • Assist with publication and correspondence needs within the ministry, including newsletter articles, weekly updates, and announcements in the church service bulletin, and mail-outs to volunteers and youth
  • Maintain annual budget and handle all related reimbursements and bill payments
  • Create and chair a leadership council of major volunteer leaders
  • Attend parish office staff meetings and worship committee meetings
